Consumer Rights & Consumer Law – Primitive Practices in Nepal

Consumer protection is a form of government regulation which protects the interests of consumers. For example, a government may require businesses to disclose detailed information about products—particularly in areas where safety or public health is an issue, such as food. Consumer protection is linked to the idea of consumer rights (that consumers have various rights as consumers), and to the formation of consumer organizations which help consumers make better choices in the marketplace.

Consumer Protection Act in Nepal came into force on March 22, 1998 by Ministry of Law & Justice and it was recorded in Nepal Rajapatra, Vol. 47. No. 54 (E), Magh 15, 2054 (January 28, 1998). You can read it whole by clicking in this link.

I know for sure that there are many loopholes in the law and people are taking advantage out of these loopholes. For instance, in point no. 12, it is clearly mentioned that "Every vendor must keep at a conspicuous place of his shop a price-list of every consumer good sold and supplied by him, explicitly mentioning its wholesale and retail prices", but it is a sad affair that there is no governing or inspecting body to check the status of retail or wholesale outlets. Furthermore, everywhere, it is mentioned that conducting investigations and inspections is the authority of His Majesty's Government (?), the body which has no legal existence at all in today's context. His Majesty's Government has been replaced by Nepal Government a long time ago.

I'd like to request all the educated and intellect Nepalese and foreigners to have a look at this irresponsible behaviour of Nepalese Government and please have your say in any media which is more convenient for you. I am open for any kind of discussion with people around the world whoever is interested in consumer law.
