With sad heart and grief, I, hereby, announce the departure of my grandfather, Minraj Karki Upadhyaya, to the heavenly abode on 16 May, 2008 at 1 am in our Nepalgunj residence. He was going to celebrate his 93rd birthday on 8th June, 2008.
Having born as prince to the state of Udaypur, Pyuthan as son of King Hari Prasad Karki Upadhyaya and Queen Muga Devi Upadhyaya and as heir to only Karki Adhikari Brahmin Kingdom, he came to Bardiya District when King Mahendra introduced "Raja Rajauta Unmulan Ain 2017" and abolished all state kingship system. He was a renowned Kabiraj (Baidhya)and Pandit too for Ramayan, Gita and Mahabharatha. Furthermore, he was a good astrologer for our family too. Amazingly, he had forecasted the month of his date some six months ago.
After coming to Bardiya he was renowned as soft hearted jamindaar who never took interest from his kamaiyaas. I remember, once in my childhood, we had a kamaiyaa, Makku Tharu, who had stayed with our family since his birth, opted to leave our family. He had to pay Rs. 500 only which my grand father forgave. After 2 years he wanted to join our family back and surprisingly my grand father had to pay Rs. 8000 to bring him back. The story reveals how linean he was and how ill hearted his contemporary jamindars were.
He had also stood as a candidate in the first democratic election of Nepal from Pyuthan and was the nearest competitor. He established a scholarship trust in memory of his mother and father "Muga Hari Chhatrabiti Kosh" in Mahendra Bahumukhi Campus of Nepalgunj.
Our family will miss his expert guidance and unconditional love in his absense.
We Love You Hajur Buwa!!
